Maya’s Answer

Hi Athena,

I hear your concern. Technology is definitely taking off and making us more efficient and adding complexity to everyday life, however there is still going to be a need for human involvement. Tech is constantly changing, and roles are constantly evolving with that. My advice to you would be to if you have time, invest in learning to harness these new technologies to use them to help you be better at your job. That could look like learning how to "prompt engineer" more effectively, or even just exploring all of the different tools that leverage technologies like AI and learn about their capabilities, but also their limitations and be well aware of them. Also, if there are certain fields you're particularly interested in, try to find experts in the field and reach out to them to get their thoughts on this topic as well! They will have a good perspective as to how technology might disrupt that field specifically.

Tony’s Answer

I can certainly understand the concern you have about jobs potentially being replaced or significantly altered by computers or robots, or some other technology. But I would like to suggest that rather than seeking a career that is not at risk of replacement or substantial disruption, it would be more productive to seek a career path that can prepare you to adapt to the changes that do occur, because it will be almost impossible to find a role that can avoid such changes.

So, how does one prepare for technological change? Let me suggest two strategies.

1) Learn as much as you can about new technology and its potential applications to various careers and prepare yourself to drive or direct the use of recent technology, not just accept it. People who lead technological change have much more control over their careers than people who hide from it. They also understand the harmful aspects of modern technology and are better equipped to avoid such harm.

2) Like anything else, there is no substitute for practice or experience. If you want to prepare yourself for change, look for opportunities that allow you to experience change in both your professional and personal life. Look for careers that allow you to take on different roles and try new things in your personal life - specifically things where you don't have full control over the situation or where it is hard to predict how something will turn out.

To answer your original question, very few careers come to mind that can't be partially or completely replaced by technology, although hopefully humans will still direct the use of that technology. One of the few roles that comes to mind is politician, and even that role has been significantly influenced by new technology.

Craig’s Answer

In my view, careers that are likely to stand the test of time are those that revolve around compliance. With the rapid progression of technology, the demand for compliance experts is set to rise, ensuring that technology is regulated for safe usage. Almost every industry has compliance requirements, so pick an area that piques your interest, and explore the compliance needs within that particular sector. This way, you're not only securing your future but also contributing positively to the world.
