Steward "Tony"’s Answer

Life was not meant to give you cherries and whip cream. We all must plant it and whip it to enjoy that moment of sweet surprise. That taste of sweetness that comes with hard work or study or even both.

I know a few US Marines & US Army soldiers from Nigeria. Good guys, funny as all heck but serious about what they want for their families, friends and community. They are men of honor in my eyes. They felt like you too and not ashamed to share it. As a NYC street kid, I too needed to release frustration.

I found work doing manual labor, loading trucks in my spare time thinking, if I do not change my focus, I will be loading trucks for the rest of my life. I would just take what I was doing on the job and picture in my mind, such a life without any other option, but being broke and tired till completely broken.

You have an option my friend. Never give yourself a "NO", keep moving forward, pray, meditate, help others in your spare time, study a martial art/boxing and just study away with content in your heart.

Anjali’s Answer

Hello Benjamin,

I trust you're doing splendidly! It's a universal truth that we all encounter periods in our lives where our motivation seems to wane or even disappear completely. I, too, experience such moments. When I do, I find solace in remembering why I embarked on the task in the first place. Clarity of purpose is vital, and it should be compelling enough to keep you awake with excitement and anticipation. So, take a moment to remind yourself of your purpose and jot down the steps you need to take to achieve it.

Avoid distractions as much as possible. Begin with a manageable task that won't overwhelm you. Gradually, as you gain momentum, you can tackle more complex tasks. This approach will undoubtedly bring you closer to your goal sooner than you think.

Remember, it's essential to take periodic breaks when stress levels rise. Consider these breaks as rewards for your diligence and hard work. Engage in a hobby, play a sport, travel, or catch up with friends. Simply put, do something that brings you joy. This will allow you to return to your task feeling rejuvenated and energized.

I hope you find this advice helpful! I'm cheering for you and wish you nothing but success. Take good care of yourself, Benjamin!

Mandi’s Answer

Hi Benjamin! First, I hope this response finds you well. I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with your motivation, but I can say that with school and even in our careers we all experience this. I would call it burn out and it is okay to feel this way. When this happens I like to take the time to reflect on why I decided to get into what I do. I remind myself why I chose to go back to school and why I chose to get into the career I have now. Making a list can help. For example, I decided to go back to school to pursue a life long dream I've had of becoming a doctor, I knew it was going to be hard and that I would have to start at the bottom because I had been out of school for so long, but I know that it is going to be worth it. I love helping and serving others. I also like to look at where I started so that I can see just how far I've come. Sometimes looking at our accomplishments and seeing how far we've come and how close we are to finishing can give us the pick me up we need. While I still have a long way to go, I am close to finishing the first goal I set for myself while setting up the transition for the second goal. Seeing this makes me so happy and makes me want to continue to push forward.

Take time to reflect on the positives you have in your journey! List out all the things you love about the career you are pursuing as well as all the things you love about school and what you are learning. If you need to talk to someone there are many options available to you. Also I am a message away. Just reply to this and we can continue to talk if you need to.
