How can I impact my country?

I am writing to you with passion for the change I want to see in this world. Not to bring up politics directly, but that is exactly why I feel a sudden urge to dive deeper into careers in advocacy for social justice and human rights. I know there are many jobs in journalism dealing with the discussion of topics like this, but I know I am way too biased to ever maintain a career in political journalism. I was just researching civil rights/advocacy jobs, and many have related majors that I should focus on and earn a degree in. While I am absolutely positively remaining and earning a bachelor's degree in LA/CAR Studies, I was wondering if there would be a minor or concentration, I could add to get more experience in the field of advocacy? Or if there are any clubs you are aware of, rather than putting myself into more debt, that I could join and become an active member? My main interest specifically with LAS is the international side of advocacy, but I also have an interest in civil rights pertaining to women, LGBTQ+, etc... I can't think of a specific one to focus on as I find importance in representation of all. I hope you can make sense of my word spaghetti.

Thank you in advance,

Hope

Thank you comment icon Hey Hope, while I don't have an answer for you but I think it's amazing that you're thinking about getting more involved within advocacy, social justice, and your own community. I can't wait to read the answers you receive! Gurpreet Lally, Admin
Thank you comment icon Hi Hope! I LOVE that you're thinking about ways you can make a difference in your passion areas! Can you define some of the acronyms you've used? I'm unfamiliar with LA/CAR Studies and what LAS means. Perhaps it would provide clarity to some volunteers as well. Thanks so much in advance! (And +1 Gurpreet's comment. I'm excited for the answers that will come in!) yoonji KIM, Admin

Advocacy can come from a number of careers you should and will eventually pursue. However it's a large concept and I will give you a few suggestions. I see you are a student, and as such , you should engage in speech and debate, Model United Nations and critical thinking ( Critical Theory) courses. Courses in critical thinking involve reading works of Aristotle and Plato .You need to be able to think and understand and even empathize with an opposing point of you. You cannot advocate for and make change with a your own feelings or opinions alone. There are great careers for advocacy such a law, politics, social work, teachers. You can also join a "think tank" where public policy is drafted. You just need to be fully prepared for the difficult work of changing another person's mind. I often think that in this time in the world...where most world leaders, even in democracies, are "strong men" who bull doze over views they don 't like and spread fear as a tool to gain power...we undervalue and forget the greatest change agents of the world: Buddha, Martin Luther ( the first one), Mohandas Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and of course Martin Luther King Jr. ( also Cesar Chavez, the list goes on and on). Read the books of these people. Read the complete history of Europe and the United States. You must understand the U.S. government and how it is structured and how it actually runs. You must work within this system so you need to know how this system works. Remember you are advocating for social change and that is very difficult and takes a lot of time, our species is not good with change. But you will do it!

( when you can register to vote, register others to vote and always...always vote or your advocacy will be for nothing)
