Alex’s Answer

Hi John, I have a bit of experience studying video game design in college and I have friends and family that have worked in the video game industry so I can speak about this a bit. I think first you have to ask yourself, what specifically about video games are you interested in where you want to make it your career? The video game industry is not so different from any other industry. There are technical careers like software engineers, creative careers like art/sound design, and general management careers like accounting.

1. Are you interested in how games are made?
There are careers like software engineers (programming video games), hardware engineers (making video game consoles), game designers (designing how the game is made), playtesters/QA (making sure there's no bugs in the game, making sure the game is fun)

2. Are you interested in the art design (characters, visuals, sound design, background, user experience/user interface (UX/UI))
There are careers like character designers, sound engineers, and art directors.

3. Are you interested in working with gamers?
There are careers at companies like streaming companies (Twitch, YouTube), computer part companies (Nvidia, AMD), and peripheral companies (Razor, Corsair, Logitech), that indirectly work with video games as well.

4. Are you interested in working in the industry because you like video games?
Pretty much any type of career is available in the video game industry. There are ones that directly impact how games are made, but there are also careers doing marketing, advertising, accounting, finance, project management, IT, etc.

Evany’s Answer

Hi John, there are a lot of careers out there that are gamers friendly, but of it all, you have to pick what would work for you. As a gamer, you may also try physical sports , let’s say a basketball coach or a player. But if you really want to go into technology, then I’ll suggest

Evany recommends the following next steps:

1. Game testing
2. Software development
3. UI and UX designing
4. Video game developer
But still you can do your research and find what’s easiest for you, these are just suggestions.
