Hi Kurt - thank you for your question. Here you find some points to consider, try to think at examples that you might have experienced and your reaction to those.
- Define what career means for you: does it mean getting more responsibilities, becoming focus/leader in specific areas, ultimately you need to define what success is for you. No one else can define what makes you happy. People may advise you, but it's your choice
- Above point requires you to surround yourself with people who know you, listen to you, give you advice and share experience
- Set a timeline: you cannot forget that you have a life outside work. How do you plan to balance work with other important parts in your life, family, friends and time for yourself
- Risk taking: unfortunately nothing is free in life, at least based on my experience and you don’t really find it all written in a book. How can you balance benefits vs potential losses (not necessarily monetary risk), how can you compromise (personal time, setbacks, endurance, perseverance)
- Are you passionate about your work: do you feel personally involved in what you do, do you feel motivated enough and if not, do you expect that someone helps you find the right motivation, or do you chase it alone?
- How do you see changes: any kind of change, do you embrace challenges, can you adapt to different situations, or do you prefer a more stable plain routine. Not judging here if the routine is bad or not, but adaptability to changes is important if you are considering a change in your career.. it can be a differentiator factor
- How do you cope with feedback: do you welcome criticism, do you look back at what you did, do you make good use of lessons learned. And on the more positive side, when you receive compliments, do you feel motivated to do more, or you think you have achieved your goals

Below are my suggestions:

Eg if you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
If you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges

There are some great answers to this question, but my first message is that you should be EMPOWERED to own your career. All too often employees think that you should wait for management to tell you what to do, or people telling you why you should not pursue a path. Think about what you enjoy doing and do not be afraid of taking some level of risk. Take the initiative - if it is a brand new area you want to explore, find someone in that field of expertise. If it is to progress your career in your company, talk to your manager, a mentor - share your aspirations and ask how you can get there,
