Tara’s Answer

Hey there!

I’m not a farm coordinator myself, but I’ve had lots of chats about this with my partner, who’s an engineer. He’s super passionate about how technology and engineering are transforming farming, so I’m excited to share what we’ve been discussing.

The world of farming is changing so much thanks to tech. Honestly, it’s wild! My partner keeps saying that engineers will play a huge role in shaping the future of agriculture. It's no longer just about tractors and soil—now we’re talking about drones, robotics, data analytics, and even artificial intelligence. Imagine robots helping with harvesting or drones flying over fields to check on crops. It’s like sci-fi, but it’s happening right now!

One of the coolest things we’ve talked about is how farmers today have access to tons of data. By using sensors in the soil, satellites, and even smart irrigation systems, farmers can know exactly when to water, fertilize, or harvest their crops. My partner explains that this not only saves water and resources but also boosts crop yields. It’s like having a crystal ball that shows you exactly what your crops need.

Sustainable Farming = this is a big one. With climate change and all the challenges the world is facing, using technology to farm more sustainably is super important. Engineers are coming up with ways to use less water, reduce pesticide use, and even find new ways to grow crops indoors using vertical farming. My partner’s always saying that the next generation of farmers are going to be more like tech experts than traditional farmers—and that’s going to help feed more people while taking care of the planet.

One of the areas my partner gets really excited about is automation. It’s not just about making farming easier but also about tackling the labor shortages many farms are facing. There are robots that can pick fruit, automated systems that can milk cows, and even machines that can plant seeds with perfect precision. It’s like having a team of extra hands working around the clock.

Here’s the thing—farmers today need tech-savvy people to help them get the most out of these new tools. That’s where engineers come in. They’re the ones designing the tech, figuring out how to integrate it into farms, and making sure it works smoothly. My partner believes that if you want to be in farming these days, having some tech knowledge or partnering with someone who does can really set you up for success.

Farming is definitely not what it used to be—it’s evolving quickly, and those who embrace technology are the ones who are going to thrive. It’s really exciting to see how innovation is taking agriculture to the next level, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the next few years.

Rich’s Answer

Huge space to get involved in and build a career path!

I know of a business that makes commercial chicken coops that move throughout the day, creating a healthier environment for the land and chickens.

I am involved in building Aquaponic gardens which has seen some recent technological advances and products.

I would say tech is being developed across the board, but what most excites me in looking at decentralizing the commercial farming techniques, to have more manufacturing in localized areas of diversified products. Think of bananas grown in the north.

Genetic alterations are probably the most advance technology. Both controversial but also promising.
