Engineering seems to be the broadest based of the engineering disciplines that you can get a degree in and efforts to focus on areas that fit your talents and desires will pay rewards in an efficient education. however in High school you should take as much STEM classes as possible to prepare yourself for college. remember that times change as does your interests as you are exposed to different views and conditions, however with the right forethought and schooling find you will a place in mechanical engineering that will fit your desires. But always put forth great effort in your studies and learning.
Specifically you should find a mentor in the field similar to what you want to become and have them answer your specific questions and guide you along the way. Depending on where you are on your life path you may find a mentor among your relatives, teachers, or in your present employment position.

However, I would recommend strongly going for a master's degree or even a PhD in Mechanical Engineering before family responsibilities make it difficult for you to pursue higher education.
