I think Windows computers are more affordable, easier to upgrade, and compatible with more software, but Macs streamline the user experience to deliver a high-end machine that looks and performs great. Other less common platforms are Chromebook and Linux (on Mac or PC).
Which computer you choose depends on your needs and your situation. If you are working and use a laptop for work, an important factor is what platform your company IT supports. If the company and the apps they require are supported on Windows, you’re probably better off with a Windows laptop. If you are in school or another organization, consider which platform most of your peers are using. If most are using Macs, you’ll be able to get help and collaborate more effectively with a Mac. I believe people doing video and graphic design tend to use Macs because of how Apple tuned the hardware and the availability of graphic design software. Also, if you have or are planning to get an iPhone or iPad, I think Apple products are designed to work together seamlessly.
I’ve owned and used both Mac and PCs. I’m currently using a PC laptop because some apps required by my business run better on Windows (fewer problems, quicker support from company IT). I’ve also experienced occasional difficulty troubleshooting issues on a Mac – it seems like the platform and Mac OS try to hide technical workings from the user. But that’s mostly my perspective – I’m an engineer at heart. I only know one other person who even bothers to try troubleshooting issues experienced on a Mac.
If you’re considering buying a laptop, I think you are wise for asking the question and making an informed decision.
