Is the IB Program going to help me get into my dream school if I struggled during the first two years of high school?

For reference I was averaging a 3.2 for my freshman and sophomore years of high school and now I have been accepted into the IB Diploma program due to my exceptional testing abilities alongside my out of school activities. I have made improvements to my schoolwork but I was wondering if it was possible for me to still be accepted into Ivy-League schools. Princeton or MIT are my ultimate goals, especially since I'm on the East Coast, and so does doing the IB Diploma program help me with this at all? Also does it help with the application of scholarships to aid my education, or is it simply an outside diploma that I can put on my resume?

Karissa’s Answer

There are a lot of answers to this question. As part of the IB program you have to take an exam for each subject. Your score on that exam will give you a 4.0, 3.0 or 2.0 for that class when you get to college. If you complete the IB program and get a 3.0 or 4.0 grade for each class then the answers you read here apply. Be advised you missed out on taking IB classes for the last two years so you are not a "traditional" IB student. You did not mention taking AP classes in your freshman and sophomore year. If you did not take honors or AP classes the last two years your GPA is weak and an Ivy League school is probably out of the question.

Karissa recommends the following next steps:

Make an appointment with the IB program counselor.

Mack’s Answer

Hello Nicholas,

From my experience as a high school teacher several years ago, most students pursuing elite colleges felt a multifaceted high school resume was more important than grades, alone. Still, class rank and GPA are part of that resume!

Feedback from their first year or so in college was that the IB program prepared them well for college classes and study. So, if you feel comfortable in the IB classes, they will have benefit in your college program no matter what school you attend.

You have set challenging standards; pursue them as hard as you can,

Mack
