I've been in a career prep class for a while now and I still have no set idea on what career I want to pursue.

Hi Torey,

There are free quizzes online that allow you to narrow down some of your options depending on what you like to do. You can also consider volunteering in some of the fields that interest you to find out if that is truly something you'd like to pursue for a career. I thought that I wanted to be a nurse so I volunteered at the hospital and soon realized that maybe that career path was not for me, so I switched gears. You can go to job fairs as well and talk to recruiters about the types of jobs that companies have and perhaps do an internship. Mentors can also help explain to you what a day looks like for them.

TRAVIS’s Answer

Hello Torey,
Great question. Here are some ways to approach this question. Who do you know? That is a great way to get your first step in a career, if you have friends or relatives in careers paths that you are interested in. Where do you want to live? That will determine the job market available to you. What type of person are you? Do you like working outside or with your hands or in an office? What type of work environment do you like? Answer those questions first and that will greatly narrow down your career choices. Good luck

Hello Torey

Narrowing down your career options can be a challenging but rewarding process. Here are some steps you can take to help clarify your interests and find a direction:

1. **Self-Assessment**:
- **Interests**: Reflect on what you enjoy doing in your free time. What subjects or activities excite you?
- **Skills**: Identify your strengths and abilities. Consider taking an aptitude test or career assessment quiz to gain insights.
- **Values**: Determine what is most important to you in a career (e.g., work-life balance, helping others, creativity, stability).

2. **Explore Career Fields**:
- Research various industries and professions. Websites like the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) or O*NET Online can provide detailed information on job roles, required skills, salary ranges, and job outlooks.
- Attend career fairs or networking events to learn more about different fields and meet professionals.

3. **Informational Interviews**:
- Reach out to people who work in fields you’re interested in. Ask them about their experiences, what they like about their jobs, and the challenges they face.
- Consider asking for a job shadowing opportunity to see a day in the life of a professional in that field.

4. **Internships and Volunteering**:
- Gain hands-on experience through internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer work. This allows you to explore different roles and industries while building your skills and network.

5. **Set Goals**:
- Create short-term and long-term goals based on your interests and experiences. This can help you focus your efforts and make progress toward a specific career path.

6. **Consider Further Education or Training**:
- Think about whether you need additional education, certifications, or training for the careers you're considering. Research programs that align with your interests.

7. **Trial and Error**: Don’t be afraid to try different roles to see what fits. Temporary positions, internships, or freelance work can provide insight into various options.
Seek Guidance:

Talk to a career counselor or mentor for personalized advice and support. They can help you explore your options and provide valuable resources.
Reflect and Reassess:

Periodically take time to reflect on your experiences and what you’ve learned about yourself. It’s okay for your interests to evolve over time.
Stay Open-Minded:

Keep an open mind about career possibilities. Sometimes the right path may be in an area you hadn’t initially considered.
By taking these steps, you can better understand your preferences and make a more informed decision about your career path. Remember that it's normal for this process to take time, and it's okay to explore multiple options before settling on one.

Great Success!
