When I was a little kid, I loved science, and then when I got older and started studying art, I took a photography class. It was amazing to see how science and math come together to create some really cool art!

Good afternoon. When I read your question I was amazingly astounded because Art has a plethora of extensions! And, like poetry, has professional guidelines, but no limitations. No one can judge Art because it is an expression of the heart. Also, the rules of Art are being bent and expanded daily. Personally, I love art and have had many different Art Teachers who are as extremely different as their Art techniques, but so beautiful and captivating as their creations. The Art forms I am experienced in are Drawing, Ceramics, Metal Works and Wood Design. But, I also know about Computer Aided Drafting and Digital Imaging. However, if I were to want my son to know about Art, I would first take him to a museum. There you can visit past, present and ideas for future Art. And, usually, the museum has a day where they allow patrons to visit for free.
To answer your question, academically, there are seven traditional Arts are painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, performing arts, and film. The seven elements of Art are the building blocks of art and include line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color. There are additional artforms including crafts , drawing , environmental art , photography, printmaking, graphic arts (painting, drawing, design, and other forms expressed on flat surfaces), plastic arts (sculpture and modeling) and decorative arts (enamelwork). And, I have seen (and I actually sell at my boutique) the different forms of Art with acrylic. I have done some research and want you to see what you can do and what the current pay range is moving forward as an Artist.

Consider studying 2D design--layout/composition, color theory, and typography (particularly if you think you might be interested in graphic design), as well as 3D design to learn the fundamentals of sculpture--types of sculpture, media, tools and techniques. Both will teach you composition, which is critical. I also highly recommend art history studies, though they can be pretty boring until you get your feet wet and understand their relevance to you.
Beyond that, there are all kinds of specific courses you could take. But design and composition fundamentals are where most art studies begin.
