Joyce,

If you are in HS, you honestly probably don't need a resume for a "first job." You can apply to retail, restaurants, and fast food via the company websites, by completing an online application. BUT, those applications often have specific instructions that don't allow HS students to showcase themselves very well. For example, "Work History. Include PAID positions only." So, if you have volunteer experience, now what? If you list it anyway, you get downgraded for not following instructions. This is why a resume is still a good tool to have - YOU decide what goes on it and what doesn't!

If you are using a good template, it will allow you to create and rearrange the sections as you see fit. If it doesn't allow you to do this, please check out Gotresumebuilder.com So, if you want to have a section titled "extracurricular activities" you should be able to do so.

The resume should catch the reader's attention within the top 1/3 of the page. Below the heading, I like to have a "summary of qualifications" or "skills" section. That should be a brief list of your strongest assets - customer service experience, attentive to detail, leader, organizer, etc.

Below that you can list your education, since you have no work experience, then a section on extracurricular activities (band, sports) or volunteer activities (even if outside of school)

Long ago we used to list hobbies. I think it would be okay to add that.

The single most important thing is to be truthful and don't have any misspelled words! Also, if you have a "cutsie" email address, consider creating a professional sounding one.

Let me know if you have additional questions, get stuck on how to word something, etc. This is an important step as you begin your career - good luck!

Joyce,

A resume is very important as it speaks for you in lieu of you directly talking to the employer.

They say many employers spend about 7 seconds reading through each resume they get, and they can get a LOT of them. So, a good resume should grab the attention of the employer and hopefully your skillset matches what they are looking for.

I really like to see a statement of what kind of a person you are and what you are looking for in a job. Something like: "Flexible, upbeat candidate looking for a role in a dynamic organization where I can expand my people skills and help deliver great customer experience."

Summary of skills is very important as it allows the employer to quickly see if your skills match what they are looking for. You can tailor your resume to match your skills the employer has listed in their job description. For example, if the employer is looking for experience helping bag groceries for customers and you have done that for years, you should make sure you list those months/years of experience on your resume. Something like: "Assisted customers efficiently bag groceries with a smile at xx store for 2 years after school".

Job experience is important to show what you have done, so make sure that you list that as well. Your resume will grow as you take different jobs over time. I think it's helpful for you to think about what ultimate job you would like and tailor your job searches to roles that will help you achieve that goal. For example: When you start out, you take jobs that give you money for college to earn a degree needed for your ultimate role. EVERY job you get expands your skillset, and you should put your whole self into each role, so each employer has a positive view of your performance.

Joyce - it sounds like you are just starting your journey into the workforce. Congratulations! It's very exciting and can be scary.

My advice: Put yourself out there and work hard at every job you get. A great work ethic will set you up for a great career. Good luck!

Hello Joyce!

Best Way to Apply for a Job

Applying for a job can be a structured process that involves several key steps. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how to effectively apply for a job, especially if you are doing it for the first time.

1. Understand the Job Market and Identify Opportunities

Before applying, it’s crucial to understand the job market in your field of interest. Research industries that are hiring and identify specific companies or organizations that align with your career goals. Utilize job search engines like Indeed, LinkedIn, or Glassdoor to find openings that match your skills and interests.

2. Tailor Your Resume

A resume is an essential document in the job application process. It serves as a summary of your qualifications, experiences, and skills relevant to the position you are applying for. Here’s how to create an effective resume:

Format: Use a clean, professional format with clear headings and bullet points.
Content: Include sections such as contact information, objective statement (optional), education, work experience (if applicable), skills, and any relevant certifications or volunteer work.
Tailoring: Customize your resume for each job application by highlighting experiences and skills that are most relevant to the specific position.

3. Write a Compelling Cover Letter

While not always required, a cover letter can enhance your application by providing context to your resume. It allows you to express why you are interested in the position and how your background makes you a suitable candidate.

Structure: Start with an introduction stating the position you’re applying for, followed by paragraphs detailing your qualifications and concluding with a strong closing statement.
Personalization: Address the letter to the hiring manager if possible and mention specifics about the company or role that attract you.

4. Prepare Your Online Presence

In today’s digital age, many employers will look at your online presence before making hiring decisions. Ensure that:

Your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and matches your resume.
You maintain professionalism on social media platforms; consider adjusting privacy settings if necessary.

5. Submit Your Application

Follow the application instructions provided in the job listing carefully. This may involve submitting through an online portal or emailing your documents directly to HR. Make sure all files are named appropriately (e.g., “YourName_Resume.pdf”) and double-check for any errors before submission.

6. Follow Up

After submitting your application, it’s advisable to follow up within one week if you haven’t heard back. A polite email expressing continued interest can help keep you on their radar.

Importance of a Resume

A resume is extremely important when applying for jobs because:

First Impression: It often serves as the first impression an employer has of you.
Summary of Qualifications: It succinctly summarizes your skills and experiences relevant to the position.
Interview Preparation: A well-crafted resume can also serve as a reference point during interviews.

In summary, applying for a job involves researching opportunities, tailoring your resume and cover letter, maintaining an appropriate online presence, submitting applications correctly, and following up afterward. A resume is critical in this process as it showcases your qualifications effectively.
