I was a automotive technician who switched over to the diesel side part way through my career. Working on cars was fun but parts that needed to be replaced were often in very difficult spots. Diesel trucks didn't really have this problem. Everything is bigger (and heavier) on the diesel side, which can make repairs less complicated, but more physically challenging. I think any shop environment is going to be fun but I think I preferred the diesel side more. I really enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships I developed working along side those guys. Diesel technicians aren't a dime a dozen like on the automotive side, so that and the industry it operates in, usually makes diesel jobs higher paying. Add to that, a commercial driver's license, and you are a pretty valuable person in the eyes of your management. The only real downside of diesel, is that it is more difficult to stay clean and you will probably bring some of it home with you. But, if you like working with your hands, getting dirty, slugging around heavy parts and working on a vehicle that can move 80,000 lbs loaded, this might be a good career choice for you.
