Hello Sia. Great question! I've worked in aerospace for a few years, mainly as a freelance/contract engineer. Working as a contractor allows me to go where the work is, a valuable skill when local layoffs can suddenly flood the marketplace with skilled talent...and competition.

The industry is being shaken at the moment from cyclic and economic layoffs. There's a LOT of unemployed talent checking for jobs, so your competition is formidable. I recently read in Reuters that Bombardier has announced massive layoffs in Canada and Europe.

Boeing is laying off thousands in the Seattle region, AIrbus has its headaches as well. This also means flowdown disruptions to the smaller suppliers to these companies.

Are you intersted in commercial aerospace, with AIrbus, Embraer, Airbus and the like? Or, in military aerospace with Pratt & Whitney, etc? Perhaps a rocket aerospace career with the likes of NASA, ESA, JAXA, Virgin Mobile, Orbital, etc?

There is no limit, not even the sky! As you prepare your curriculum, take care to include fun activities which help you to speak with confidence to managers and peers. Toastmasters is a great example for overcoming fear of public speaking.

I'll await your reply so I can better refine my replies.

Daniela’s Answer

Sia,

The opportunities available in aerospace engineering are expected to increase because of advances in technology and changes in the designs of many types of aircraft and spacecraft. There are also opportunities available due to engineers retiring or changing occupations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for aerospace engineers will grow by seven percent from 2012-2022 (www.bls.gov). This growth rate is slower than the average rate for all occupations during that time period.

Job stability for aerospace engineers can decrease as organizations increase the practice of using contract engineers from engineering firms instead of hiring the professionals outright. Cuts by the government in defense spending or research funding can result in job loss for aerospace engineers as well. To remain competitive in this industry, aerospace engineers should continually update their education and certifications to stay current with changes in technology or methodology.
