What are some good internships or experiences to try and apply for/ gain as an International Development studies major?

I am slightly worried about what internships or other experiences I should try to apply for as a second year International Development studies major at UCLA. I am very interested in international relations and, until recently, really wanted to work for the state department. I also love research but am unsure how to go about trying to get these opportunities. Many of the applications I had been looking at are on an indefinite pause due to what is happening right now in the government and I am not sure how to look for more. If there is anything specific someone could recommend or a website I should focus on I would appreciate it!

Hey Charlie, I totally get the concern—when things are in flux, it can feel like the usual internship doors are a bit creaky.
Since you’re into international development and research, consider casting a wide net. Think about exploring internships at NGOs, think tanks, or even local community organizations with a global focus. Websites like Idealist and Devex are great spots to scout for opportunities that might not be tied directly to government agencies. Also, check out UCLA’s career center for any research assistant positions or internships related to international studies.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors or advisors—they often have insider info on upcoming projects or internships that align with your interests. And if the State Department path is on pause, you might find that nonprofits or international organizations, like the United Nations or smaller humanitarian groups, have some exciting openings that could give you hands-on experience.

Keep networking, stay curious, and be open to a variety of experiences. Every step you take builds your resume and your understanding of the field. Good luck, and may you land that dream opportunity soon!😉🤗 If you need anything to know just let me know buddy!

Honestly, I’m not too sure about this field. It seems like Dr. H covered a lot of good points, and I wouldn’t even know what to add. Maybe just keep searching and networking? Sorry, I don’t have a better answer!

Hi Charlie,

That is an interesting question in the current political situation. We don't really know which departments will even exist in the future.

So, try to come up with a list of opportunities that include US government and institutions as well as independent institutions like NGOs, think tanks, and foreign institutions.

How about news organizations, main stream media or independant channels like Meidas Touch, that research and report on international politics?

State Department, Diplomatic Service, senators, foreign embassies, faculty in international relations or adjacent fields,
Gates Foundation, Clinton Foundation, UN, Unicef, World Bank, World Food Program, UNHCR, Hoover Institute, Oakland Institute, Third World Network,
CNN, CBS, NBC, New York Times, Meidas Touch, Brian Tyler Cohen, The Bulwark, etc

Please find a couple of links below. I hope this helps a bit! All the best!
