Hey David,
Alright, so Diana gave some great advice! Brushing up on math is super important since the IBEW entrance exam includes algebra and mechanical reasoning. Strong math skills will help you pass the test and make things easier once you start working, especially when dealing with electrical formulas, measurements, and blueprints.
Beyond that, getting hands-on experience is a game changer. If you can, try to shadow an electrician, take a basic electrical course, or even do small projects at home under supervision. Familiarizing yourself with tools like multimeters, conduit benders, and wire strippers will give you a head start.
Physical fitness is another key factor—being an electrician can be physically demanding, so building strength and endurance will help you keep up with the work.
Lastly, don’t overlook soft skills! Communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are huge in this field. You’ll be working with other electricians, contractors, and clients, so being able to explain things clearly and work efficiently with a team will set you apart.
Good luck with the IBEW! It’s a solid career with great pay, benefits, and job security. Keep learning, stay proactive, and you’ll do great! 🚀

Good plan! The unions are a solid future. I’d suggest brushing up on your math skills. San Mateo adult school has an online math prep class FREE for any high school graduate. It fills up fast so go online to Sam mateo adult center under programs / vocational and get on the waitlist if you have to. The class will prepare you to take the math test that is given when you sign up for the union. Best to be as prepared as possible.
Good luck!

Hi David,
I join the other replies that you have already received that focus on your mathematical reasoning and math skills along with practicing test taking to prepare yourself for joining the IBEW and a career in the electrical field. I also feel you will have many career and job opportunities in that field and a strong knowledge, understanding and skills in math and computer science which is the foundation of everything electrical will make things easier for you in the future. Tests are used to measure your proficiency and level of such skill and/or knowledge so getting good at taking them will improve your scores and therefore your progression as you move ahead. Look up sites where you can practice taking tests as there out there.
All the best
