is there a website for animation keys?

I want to know what things to draw when it comes to animation since I know there's a strategy and not every frame needs to be drawn sometimes.

Hi Mishka,
Good question. No matter the animation medium... be it 2d traditional hand drawn animation, or 3D animation... Keyframes are the most essential part of an animation and the starting point. They boil down the performance to the most essential poses so there is a clear communication of what is happening within your scene.

You can look up "Keyframes in Animation" videos, and get a good understanding of how they work.

This fellow does a pretty good job of explaining them.

Mishka,

This is a Very good question. You must already be quite familiar with the process to ask this. I would love to hear the answer to this as well; I don't know. I do know that if you could find some gifs or videos of the old 2D Disney animations, those would probably be very good examples. Those animators knew their stuff. Hopefully, someone will be able to provide us some resources here.

Rebeca’s Answer

Oiee Mishka,
There's many websites where you can find animation keyframes to study, my personal strategy is to search "anime genga" on youtube and pinterest where you can find the keyframe drawing showing also the notes for shadows, lights and timing. One of my favorite youtubers:
✦ Dong Chang yt
✦ Spywi's Mind Palace yt
✦ Sakuga Foundry yt

Another great website it's sakugabooru.com, here you find lots of animated scenes where you can pass frame by frame to see exactly when a they added a new drawing, I highly recommend this website to study.

Using this websites are essencial but about knowing what to draw my advice is to first choose if you wanna animate in ONES, TWOS or THREES.
✦ Animating in ONES using the default 24fps (frames by second) means that for 1second of animation you will need to draw 24 drawings.
✦ Animating in TWOS using the default 24fps means that for 1second of animation you will need to draw 12 drawings.
✦ Animating in THREES using the default of 24fps means that for 1second of animation you will need to draw 8 drawings.

This metod reduces the amount of drawings you need to make, the most common it's animmating on twos but in japanese animes they animate in threes. Even tough this information when you feel taht you need to add another drawing just do it, you can mix & match the timing to your like.

Other tip is to separate the animation in parts, don't draw everything in the same layer, separating the animation in primary actions and secondary actions helps to not make a lot of drawings too.
Focus on the main action and animate the following actions with less frames, it all depends on feeling if the animation looks right.

Even if it looks hard my main advice is OBSERVATION.
Observing your surroundings makes you notice the timing of the moviments and when you notice you will be animating fast and without need to draw a lot of drawings.

Hope it helped in some way, have a blessed journey!
