Seeking Advice: Essential Skills for a Cybersecurity Internship.?

I'm currently preparing to secure a cybersecurity internship and would love to hear from industry professionals and fellow enthusiasts. What are all the skills—both technical and soft—that you believe are essential to crack a cybersecurity internship? I'm particularly interested in learning about:

Technical competencies (e.g., networking, programming, vulnerability assessment)
Soft skills (e.g., communication, analytical thinking, adaptability)
Any certifications or continuous learning resources you recommend
Your insights and advice will be greatly appreciated as I work to build a strong foundation in this dynamic field. Thank you in advance for your support!

Best regards,
Aryan

Usually, an internship is an avenue to train and gain skills in preparation to getting a job. For this case, basic requirements are a degree or a certificate in the IT field. The more specific or closer your certificate is to cybersecurity the better. Even students enrolled in colleges are eligible for internships. If you have and extra certificate eg. from Microsoft, cisco or aws it shows you're committed to learning and expanding your intellect. These extra certificates are not a must and recall that even when you have not graduated you can get an internship. Enjoy working in cyberspace and make it secure .

Whether you already have an undergraduate degree or are still working towards one in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, you're on a great path. If summer internships aren't an option for you right now, consider focusing on certifications to become a certified hacker. These certifications can be incredibly valuable and might even open more doors than internships. Keep pushing forward—you're doing great!

Aryan,

Great question!

For soft skills, you should be patient, have an open mind, have solid communication skills, and have some project experience (educational projects count too).

For technical skills, ensure you refresh your knowledge of the most prevalent TCP/IP protocols. Familiarize yourself with the concept of file hashes (including the different types) and learn how to conduct basic OSINT (Open Source Intelligence). Additionally, understand the differences between security tools such as EDR, SIEM, firewall, WAF, and so on -It doesn't hurt to also learn about a few of them like CrowdStrike & Splunk through YouTube.

For certifications, I recommend starting with CompTIA Security+ or Network+. These certifications will help you grasp all of the technical skills I recommended that you have.

I know this sounds simple, but that is about what I brought to the table when I started off as an Associate Security Analyst. With the basics, you will be able to scale or knowledge very quickly at the job as you continue to learn. I will say this, working and going to school at the same time, as I did, helped solidify and test any knowledge gaps I had at the job.

Good luck with your internship!

Respectfully,
Patrick
