Hi Nelson,
If you're thinking about becoming a police officer, choosing a college major that fits with law enforcement can really help your career. Popular majors include Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and Public Administration. These areas cover everything from the legal system and societal behavior to government and management skills. Courses like criminal law, ethics in policing, forensic psychology, crisis management, sociology, communication, public speaking, and conflict resolution are great for building a solid foundation. While you don't need chemistry, honing your critical thinking and problem-solving skills is key for doing well in this field. Hope this helps!

Hello, Nelson !
I would be happy to advise you on your plans for college for your wonderful career !
The best major for you in college would actually be to get a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice or Administration of Justice. It's named differently at different colleges, but those are the strong majors for going into police work. With that Bachelors degree, you could even have some of the Police Academy courses waived, so it's all good. As of this year, 2025, the San Francisco Police Department now requires applicants to have a Bachelors Degree.
While going for your degree for one of the majors I've mentioned, you will have to take General Education courses that are required. You didn't mention what college you'll be going to, but if you do start straight away at a California State University college, you will have a choice of which Science to take to fulfill the Biological Science without a Lab requirement. Here are some courses that fulfill this requirement: Introduction to Physical Anthropology, Introduction to Human Disease, The Global Environment, Food Science, Personal Health and Wellness, Public Health Biology, Fitness for Living, Introductory Nutrition, and Psychobiology.
You'll also need to choose a Biological Science with a Laboratory. No need to choose Chemistry if you don't want to (if you attend a CSU). Right now for this GE requirement they offer: Introduction to Marine Biology, General Microbiology for Health Professionals, Human Biology, Human Physiology, and Introduction to Evolution and Diversity. Chemistry not needed. These are just the courses at a California State University and you'd have to research this for the school you want to attend or post another separate question on here with the name of the college.
As for your general ed, choose courses that in some way connect with police work. In order to know exactly what courses will be offered to you, you do need to know what college you are intending to enroll at.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
