Hi Keenan,

Start by finishing high school, then dive into a vocational school or community college for some hands-on training in auto body repair. Get your hands into practice with entry-level apprenticeships at local shops, and take some certifications from ASE. Stay active by attending workshops or reading up on the latest car tech trends. Don’t forget to polish up soft skills—being good with customers is just as important. And network a lot by joining automotive groups and hitting up local events. It’s a journey, but with dedication and a love for cars, you'll be cruising to the top in no time!

Carlos’s Answer

Hi Keenan,

I don't have any experience with auto body work, but conventional wisdom suggests that if you want to be the best at something, it may suit you to get an apprenticeship with a body shop near you. This way, you can gain practical experience even before going to school for it. I believe there are many auto body shops in California that would be more than willing to help you.

Eric Scott’s Answer

I once lived in San Diego for about three years, which might not seem brief, but it was a meaningful time. In California, the term "body work" has different meanings. In Philadelphia, it usually means fixing up a car after an accident, like when it hits a pole or a building. In California, it can mean that, or it can mean enhancing cars with cool additions like aftermarket parts, wings, and spoilers, making them stand out for drifting and style.

No matter which path you choose, getting started is key. It's often easier to begin by repairing cars that need some care, but there's also excitement and opportunity in customizing cars for aesthetics. Both paths require learning and dedication. While online videos can help, hands-on experience is crucial because understanding the craft involves practice and feeling the work. Starting alongside someone experienced is a great way to learn. Embrace the journey, and remember that every step you take brings you closer to mastering the art of body work.
