Is a career in Data Science still worth it?
I’m interested in data science, but unsure if it’s still worth a try with the AI, job cuts and competition. I keep seeing news about CEOs saying AI will replace people and do all the work. The layoffs also make me doubt if I should pursue this career.

Data Science will remain important in the future. As time goes on, the work and tools will change, making some tasks easier. Right now, a lot of time is spent organizing data instead of finding insights.
AI won't replace skilled people anytime soon. Programmers and data scientists are in the best position to use AI effectively. If AI does take over, it will be for simple tasks that don't add much value.
When you work, always understand how your efforts contribute to the bigger picture. Make sure your contribution keeps growing as part of the overall success.

Also, if you like software engineering, system design, and deploying models, you can move from being a Data Scientist to an AI Engineer. If you choose to stay as a Data Scientist, you'll still be important. As others have mentioned, you still have time to contribute to the advent of AI as a Data Scientist. No one knows when or what the changes of AI will happen and to what extent it will rule certain fields obsolete. I think we can all pretty safely say that we have at least 2 decades before ASI is good to function without humans in the loop.
These computers are still babies at trying to read, speak, listen, create and especially trying to move and interact with the physical world. Each of these domain areas require decades of development for which you as a Data Scientist will help. I would say pick a domain and see what the gap is in terms of Current State and Ideal State (defined by ASI and no human needed). Definitely pick the domain that interests you, but also the domain with the largest gap to close, hoping that it is the field that has the longest run ramp.

No business can 100% rely on AI for sure. Human-in-the -loop is alway necessary to saftguard every decision-making. I agree that the demand for entry level of analytsts is getting low. But those experienced analysts are still hot in the market. You will have less chance to get hired as an entry. So what you can do is to get experience somehow / somewhere.
