ANA MARIA’s Answer

Hi Jorge!

Here are a few things to keep in mind: Try to organize your time well and focus on what's important, like tasks and courses. Stick to your study plan. Don't forget to take care of yourself—get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise. And if you're having trouble with anything, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Hello,

The previous advice given was great. I’ll just say that you should have a work and play balance (extra curricular and partying). Sunday through Thursday should be for studying, majority of your time but it’s important to but in extra work hours on the weekend in order to do well. Have a good relationships with your professor if you don’t get something ask them for help exchange phone numbers with classmates whether it be for projects or just to befriend someone in your major. Hope you found this helpful let me know where you’re going I’m interested! Best of luck.

Disraeli’s Answer

Hello Jorge,
There are many ways to be successful, but to be a well-rounded success story in college I recommend:
1. Go to class and take notes. A major challenge new college students face is needing to take self-responsibility for their academic careers. You will need to keep track of everything the professor says be it deadlines, content, how you turn in homework, how things are graded, etc.
2. Join clubs. Student clubs and organizations are a great way to get involved on campus and meet people. You may even work your way up to a leadership position, which will teach you new skills and look good on a resume.
3. Visit your advisor. This is usually a requirement in your first year of college, but it is a good habit to keep just to make sure you are on track to graduate. Your advisor will be able to tell you about any volunteering, internships, or any other non-obvious requirements to graduate.

Good luck with college!

Martha’s Answer

Hi Jorge - this is an excellent question, and I agree that it is relevant to many students. To build on Disraeli's sound advice:
- There are many resources for applying to college, including your guidance counselor, the Common App, and admission websites for the schools you are applying to. I put two more in the links below
- I agree with Disraeli's advice on being successful in college. Also, keep track of your health, meaning get enough sleep, get adequate nutrition, and get exercise and fresh air (doesn't have to be fancy, could be nice walks around campus). Part of that is making and nurturing friendships so you could have fun together and support each other.
- Get involved but not over-involved. Your academics and health should come before your extra-curriculars. If you are regularly stressed about getting everything done, maybe re-evaluate your commitments.
- As for careers, there are resources at college to help you choose a career, prepare for a career, and gain a job.
Good luck!

Christopher’s Answer

Hey Jorge -

I have two kids in college right now, and I always remind them to keep their grades up because companies look at your GPA when hiring. Here are some tips for doing well in school:

Manage Your Time:
College life needs good time management to juggle studies, activities, and personal time. Make a schedule, set priorities, and plan time for studying and other things.

Go to Class:
Going to class regularly helps you keep up with the material and stay involved in learning.

Stay Organized:
Have a system to track assignments, deadlines, and important info.

Take Good Notes:
Learn to take notes that help you remember stuff and get ready for tests.

Talk to Your Teachers:
Don't be shy to ask professors questions during office hours or by email if you need help.

Make a College Plan:
Plan your studies by knowing what courses you need, picking a major, and setting goals.

Study Smart:
Find study methods that suit you, like active recall, spaced repetition, or study groups.

Use Office Hours:
Meet with professors during their office hours to clear up doubts and build connections.

If you plan to go, you need to take college seriously. It cost to much money to blow off any classes , any semester or just playing around. I personally pledged" BOOK PHI BOOK" because I paid every dime myself. So make a decision about life and DON'T WASTE TIME. Good Luck. My only other advice is to start Investing in your future as early as possible. Open a BROKERAGE account with as little as $500 / $1000 and contribute as little as $10 , $25, $50, what ever you can on AUTO transactions for the rest of your life. Start little and grow as you earn more. I have a Roth IRA ( pay taxes on the money you put in now but don't have to pay taxes on taking it out at Retirement Age. Trust me when you get 65 you'll be so glad you did, Tons of online platforms make Robo Accounts SIMPLE. E-TRADE, ACORN , SOFI , etc. But: I use : https://m1.finance/Zg7gCb8daNdW Hope that helps.

Laura’s Answer

Being a college student is a great chance to try new things, enjoy more freedom, and take on responsibilities. To succeed, you need discipline. Start by finding a class and study schedule that fits your needs. Some students treat college like a full-time job, focusing on classes and homework from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., then using evenings and weekends for personal time. Others prefer morning or afternoon classes, or choose classes on specific days to balance part-time jobs or other commitments. To thrive in college, first choose a schedule that helps you manage your time and workload effectively.
