Dear Jaycee,

I went to BYU and got a Bachelor's degree in Animation. I came to a point soon after graduation where I couldn't find a job in my career, so I made one up. I needed help and I got it, and soon had my own small, but very fun, Animation Business running. Here I am now with twenty years of experience under my belt and I still can rarely get anyone in the Animation Industry to talk with me; most of them are too busy. That's OK, because the same thing holds true now as it did then. We are meant to be Leaders. We should always remember Who we follow and make sure we align our wills with His.

There's nothing wrong with getting a job and working for someone else, that's always going to be the case, whether we are full-time or freelance, whether we run our own business or work for someone else's, and even if we are independent artists producing and selling our own work under our own name. We are all working for others whether we want to realize it or not. The key is to do whatever you do, knowing that you can be an example to others and a beacon of faith and fortitude.

My advice is to try and figure out what your greatest Gifts are and what talents and character traits you're most keen on developing. Look inward to discover these things and when you have those answers, look outward and find where what you have to offer would be most needed and appreciated. Be prepared to blaze a courageous path helping and serving others in completely unconventional ways.

Sincerely,

Wyatt s Miles

It's great that you're already thinking ahead about your career after graduation! Here’s a guide to help you find careers related to your major and determine when to start applying:

1. Research Career Options: Look up potential career paths on job platforms (LinkedIn, Indeed) and talk to your professors or advisors for advice.

2. Network: Join professional organizations, attend career fairs, and connect with alumni on LinkedIn to get advice and job leads.

3. Internships/Volunteer: Start internships early—many companies hire from their intern pools. Volunteering in your field is also valuable.

4. Update Resume & LinkedIn: Keep both up-to-date with your academic achievements, experience, and skills. Tailor them for specific jobs.

5. Start Applying Early: Begin applying 6-9 months before graduation. Many companies start hiring in the fall for positions that begin after graduation.

6. Stay Open: Consider related roles or opportunities that may not be exactly what you envisioned.

When to Start:

Start applying 6-9 months before graduation (fall of your senior year). Early preparation gives you time for interviews and job offers.
