How much is too much to take out in student loans?
I am planning to attend Howard University in the fall. I’m super excited I got in, but now I am worried about paying for it all. My parents won’t be able to help me pay for college and even with the financial aid I have been given, it looks like I will owe more than 100,000 after 4 years. Should I just choose a cheaper lesser known school?

Hello, Zia !
I am so happy that you came here to ask about this. Howard University can help you. They offer special financial help for low income students. These funds are available through financial aid funds and the Georgia GOAL program, among others programs. I advise calling the financial aid office at Howard as soon as possible to discuss this.
There are some other things you can do to add financial assistance that may allow you to not take out loans. Apply for scholarships and grants to make up whatever money you'd have received from loans. Scholarships are offered by Howard University as well as outside scholarships and grants you can apply for from businesses and private donors. To discover the many scholarships out there, do an online search for Scholarships and Grants. Each time you search, type your state, city, your major. Scholarships and grants are categorized in different ways, based on gender, race, ethnicity, major and other things. Become familiar with Scholarships at first by reading some on Scholarships dot com. They usually describe how much the scholarship is for, who usually qualifies to apply and application instructions. Have your guidance counselor at your current school help you with this.
On the other hand, there are scholarships and grants based on merit for students enrolling in traditionally Black colleges. These are awarded to students who have demonstrated in high school, leadership skills, community service or getting high grades in high school. If you fit any of these categories, you can apply to the James Weldon Johnson Scholarship (which is for this year), Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame General Scholarship. There is one that is awarded to only one student for $25,000 called the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest.
Researching scholarships is both time consuming and exciting and worth every minute of it if you want a chance at obtaining possible financial assistance for college.
Also speak with the financial aid officer at Howard to discuss Loan Refusal. The financial aid officer can give you details about how to do this without taking out loans and you can not check the option for loans on your Federal Student Financial Aid Application. Speak to an official at Howard about this.
Just to let you know, I had three professors when I was in college that went to Howard and they were among some of the top notch professors I had. You can do this. Do not give up. The more contact you make with the financial aid office, the more at ease you will be about it.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
