Nayra’s Answer

Hi Emery,

Thanks for asking this question! The service industry is where most professionals start their career because of the vast opportunities and quality experience you can get, even when it is outside your field. I started my journey in customer-facing roles, and I can tell you the hardest part is learning to stay calm and problem solve while serving customers when at their peak of their emotions. It is challenging at first, but over time you learn to overcome difficult situations and learn to manage yours and other people's emotions with empathy and understanding.

I can guarantee you will gain the best people skills along the way. As for the easiest part, if you like working with people already and are a natural at serving and doing something good for others, the best part is the feeling of accomplishment with the work and the opportunity to make a direct positive impact over someone else's life every day.

Hopefully my answer helps!

Nayra recommends the following next steps:

I recommend you start networking with working cosmetologists; they will be able to provide real life examples of challenges and best practices to manage customer expectations.
I also recommend, given the opportunity, you try finding a customer service summer job to get a close experience into working in the service industry.

Li Nar’s Answer

Hi,

Traditionally, the common saying in the service industry is that a customer is always right - and that create challenges for the service provider. The key thing to remember is the service provider is no lesser than the customer, in fact, it’s equal. The service provider is the customer’s trusted advisor. This way, you’ll be able to come from a powerful space to provide the service.
