That’s awesome! Getting started in freelance web design is totally doable, especially if you’re willing to build your skills, network, and showcase your work. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get going:

1. Build Your Skills
Learn the basics of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and optionally a builder like WordPress or Webflow.
Get familiar with design tools like Figma, Canva, or Adobe XD.
Practice by building websites for fake businesses, friends, or nonprofits.

2. Create a Portfolio
Build a personal website that shows who you are, what you do, and your best work.
Include 2–3 solid projects (even if self-made). Describe the goals, your process, and the result.
Keep it clean, mobile-friendly, and fast-loading—it's your first impression.

3. Set Up Your Freelance Essentials
Create a professional email and maybe a separate freelance brand name.
Decide on your pricing: hourly, per project, or packages (starter site, redesign, etc.).
Have templates ready for proposals, contracts, and invoices (you can find free ones online).

4. Start Finding Clients
Offer your services to family, friends, local businesses, or community groups.
Join freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer, but don’t rely on them long-term.
Be active in online communities (Reddit, Facebook groups, Discords) where small biz owners hang out.

5. Keep Improving
Stay updated on design trends and new tools.
Collect client feedback and testimonials.
Learn some SEO, accessibility, and basic copywriting—it makes you more valuable.

Hashtag Tip for Your Journey: Use something like Spring25 (as you did) to track your progress or promote your work on social media platforms, especially if you want to build a following or show your growth as a designer this season.

Hello!

First of all, for potential clients to see what you can do, you need to create a portfolio. Even if you are just starting out and don't have real clients, you can create a fictitious portfolio. Imagine that you are the client and you are also the executor. While you are creating your portfolio, create short promotional materials on social networks, so that people can find out about you and your work. With patience and perseverance, the results will come. I am an interior and furniture architect and that's how I started. Don't give up, move forward towards your dream.

Hi Kennedy,

Great question! While I’m not in the field of graphic design I do have some friends that are and I have a few tips. First you should create a portfolio to show off your work then clients will be able to see your expertise. Then I would advertise on gig sites like Fiverr to sell your skills. You could also volunteer to do logos, graphics or websites for a nonprofit to get experience and references. I hope this helps!

You've identified art and technology as areas of interest, and that's a great start! There are two types of skills to focus on: hard skills, like technical abilities, and soft skills, like communication and writing. If you're just beginning with website design, you'll want to learn HTML/CSS and how to set up web hosting. These technical skills are easier to pick up but require dedication and regular updates to stay current.

On the artistic side, making a website both attractive and user-friendly is challenging, but with practice, you can master it. I have some experience maintaining websites, and while I'm not an artist, I can work with WordPress and its templates. However, there's always room to grow beyond that.

It's up to you to decide whether you want to make a career out of this or pursue it to express your creativity. If you're more interested in the technical aspects, I can suggest some great starting points. Remember, every step you take is a step toward your goals, and you have the potential to succeed in whichever path you choose!

Jaime’s Answer

Getting started in freelance website design isn’t just about having the right technical skills—it’s also about knowing how to communicate your value clearly.

As a communication analyst, I’d say start by defining your personal brand: What makes your design style or approach unique? Make sure your portfolio and social media reflect that consistently.

Jaime recommends the following next steps:

Next, build relationships, not just a client list. Whether through LinkedIn, online communities, or local events, take time to understand what small businesses or individuals actually need in a website. Listening well and asking the right questions sets you apart from the start.
Also, be clear and confident in your proposals. How you explain your process, timelines, and value can be just as important as the final product. Clients want to feel understood and supported—good communication makes that happen.
Finally, start small, but aim high. Offer your services to a few trusted contacts or nonprofits to build real-world examples. With each project, focus on delivering not just a site, but a solution.
Strong communication = strong freelance foundation.

Hello, as with any starting small business- it’s always a good idea- to start doing practice work with friends and family- and build a portfolio- also a great idea is to visit businesses that you’d like to help- and do a sample website for them- that would include informational and transactional applications with dedicated tools- and wallets attached to them for pay features- like WePay- Square- ApplePay- GooglePay Amazon etc- and write a proposal that will beat whomever you compete with!! Add services to the client/ for example unlimited updates for one year or 10 updates per year- etc.

Sneha’s Answer

Hey Kennedy! Getting started in freelance website design is all about building a strong foundation and putting yourself out there. Here's how you can start:
1. Learn or sharpen your skills in HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript plus tools like WordPress, Figma, or Webflow depending on your style.
2. Create a few sample websites (even if they're personal or practice projects) to showcase your abilities in a portfolio.
3. Set up a professional-looking website for yourself, it acts as both a portfolio and proof of your skills.
4. Offer your services to friends, small businesses, or nonprofits at a low cost to build experience and testimonials.
5. Use platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, LinkedIn, or local community boards to find gigs and grow your network.

Good luck!
