Hi Lontavious,
I am sorry to see your question go so long without being answered. I wish I had some insight for you, but I have never worked in sports management before. My advice to you would be to reach out to the sports managers of either minor or pro teams near you. I would look them up on the team's website and write them a letter to the address on their site. Let them know a little about you and the questions you have. If you reach out to a few, you may get a response. I hope this helps!

I would say that to start, get involved in any local sports teams to get an idea of how a team environment works. Coaching (even at the assistant level) high school and community sports groups are great first examples where you can learn from the coaching and player dynamics -- taking the successes and failures learned will help in making you a better sports manager. It is all about gathering experience, even at small levels at first!

I was a sports management major, and did not know the area I wanted to focus on in sports upon entering college. The best advice I have is to volunteer for as many opportunities as possible in the athletic department within your college, and in the local sports industry. I had roles such as - marketing, stadium operations, event operations, team and equipment operations, sales, and ticket operations. I was exposed to many aspects of the industry and grew my network.
