Eli’s Answer

Hi Sidney,

It varies a little depending on whether you're in a city or not and whether it's a larger restaurant with multiple locations (chain or corporate) or an independent one. I live in Boston and the range is pretty wide- $38,000 to $55,000. The lower end of that is usually smaller, independent restaurants and the higher end tends to be corporate restaurants or hotels.

Hope that's helpful to you!

Rosie’s Answer

Hi Sydney,

Like Eli said it really is dependent on location the other key factor is the food service sales or volume. For example you may work for a hotel that does 1 million in sales a year that pays $45,000 a year for a sous chef. Where another hotel does 2 million in sales and pays $55,000 a year. Location and sales volume is key that combined with experience will set the salary range. The wide range of salaries is entry level $35,000 as high as $65,000 for a senior level Sous.
The key to remember like in any profession, love what you do and the money will follow!

Hope this helps!
