What if my college experience isn't all it's cracked up to be?

I've been told that college is where you learn about new things and make new friends and spread your wings and all that jazz, but what if that is not really the case? I have a hard time keeping and making friends, and with all of these new people and new freedom, how am I supposed to focus on befriending and having a good time? I have really awful anxiety and I'm so scared I will annoy people or be overly friendly and maybe ruin everything for myself. Are there a lot of counselors and things I can talk to in college and maybe some clubs or something around so maybe I can find people with common interests? I don't want to ruin my experience or someone else's experience from being strange, and I can only hope that it works out okay. I don't want to be a loner in college, especially with all of these people around. That would suck. #general

Your concerns are totally valid; the pressure of having a good college experience. No worries though because you mentioned tools that can absolutely help you with socializing in college. Check out your college’s Student Affairs or Student Services department for information of clubs and organizations offered. Also, often college’s have workshops or orientation for students to discuss common college concerns.

This is a great opportunity to meet other students who have some of the same concerns you have, which in turn will help you realize you are not alone. Trust me, the same fears you have, are the very same ones your peers have.

Lastly, in my experience the best way to get through college and the social beast that it can be, is to build up your confidence as much as possible! How you ask? Build on your faith if applicable or try reading the book by Rachel Hollis “Girl Wash Your Face...” College will test who you are and who you will become and the best thing you can do is to continually build your confidence and be patient in the process.

College can definitely be a challenging time at first, does your college offer resource groups or fun groups to join in your dorm? You may be able to talk to your Resident Advisor as well for some suggestions. You have your own unique and talents you can bring to any group but sometimes it takes getting our of your comfort zone and stretching yourself to get to know people.
