Hi Paris,

It is definitely a good idea to get a great education to set yourself up for success. While your education will certainly help to improve your skills, getting the job will come down to your portfolio and your work ethic.

Better established colleges and universities can definitely help you get the proper training to become a great artist. Sometimes they are going to be more expensive and/or more difficult to get into so doing some of the basic course requirements at a community college could definitely help.

US News and World Reports has rankings of universities and colleges in the US. This list is regarding fine art graduate school programs but I think that they also apply to the undergraduate programs as well:

Talk to the admissions offices of the universities that interest you and work with them to find out what their requirements are and how best to meet them. Though some smaller, community colleges might not have art programs that will be what you are looking for, they will help you to get the general education requirements out of the way to set up a transfer to another institution.

I think that this is what you're asking about. I hope that this information helps.

Dear Paris
Your portfolio and determination will get you work, learning technique takes practice. Get an associates at a community college or Bachelors and see where you go from there. SPC here in Pinellas has a fine curriculum as do many community colleges it gets the pre requisites done and if you want a masters your portfolio and GPA will help with scholarship's. You will have to submit a portfolio to all programs you want to enter and may get a scholarship or invitation to a school you want.
