What are some tips for finding a graphic design internship in high school?

I am currently a high school junior and I want to find a graphic design internship. I have been doing graphic design consistently for two years now, but it is all self taught and have never had any professional teaching. I really enjoy graphic design and hope to minor in it for college. I have been looking around for internships but they all seem to be geared towards college students. What are some tips to finding an internship during high school? #internships #high-school #graphic-design #internship #graphic-designer

The first step would be to talk to your school counselor to take interest and aptitude tests to make sure that you are aligned with people in that career area. If you are, talk to your counselor about being put in contact with graduates of your school who might be working in the graphic arts field. Contacting them and finding out what they are doing and how they got there will give you good, necessary information. When talking with them, you can ask them about internships, shadowing, and co-op opportunities that might be able available. Also, go to the reference librarian at your local library and have her/him locate professional organizations in you area to which graphic arts people might belong. Arrange to go to a meeting as a guest and try to get information as explained above. Many graphic arts people get their start at a community college, as the rates are cheaper and you can get a good education without accumulating large student loans. Also, community colleges have internship and co-op programs which will give you great exposure. Go to the alumni relations person at the community to get connected with alumni of that school who are in the graphic arts field to get helpful, needed information. Also, look in the phone book to find graphic arts businesses in you area and visit them to see what they are all about and what kind of people they employ and how they got there.
Send thank you notes to all who help you.
Good Luck!
I will be happy to help further if needed.

I would try googling local/virtual career fairs. Career fairs have lots of opportunities to meet, mingle, and network where you could present a resume and a case for why someone should consider allowing you to intern for them. Many offices may not have considered bringing on a high school student as an intern, but being able to talk with them and present a current portfolio and resume of your academic and extracurricular successes could sway them to invest their time, energy (and maybe even money) in you.
