Aerospace engineering is a pretty interesting field. I am personally not an aerospace engineer, however, I know that lot of engineering concepts are common between aerospace and automotive. there are few options for specialization in the field of aerospace - materials, design, controls.

I personally believe controls is pretty solid specialization to pursue as in the current market, there are more high paying jobs.

The best part of being an aerospace engineer to me is solving interesting problems. I like the days when I can to work with the hardware (spacecraft of aircraft). A lot of days are filled with paperwork and meetings. When I see something I worked on launch to space or know that we repaired something and it now works, then all the paperwork is worth it.

The best specialization is probably whatever you are most interested in. Learning doesn't end with school. Whatever you pick, you will continue to learn about for the rest of your career unless you pivot to a new specialization.

What specialization to do and what company to work for is also a reflection on you and your personality. Do you like working in large groups on giant projects or smaller groups? Big entries like Boeing, Air Force, Raytheon...will allow you to work on large projects but you will not have as much autonomy. There are hundreds if not thousands of smaller companies. Smaller companies like Astrobotics will probably provide you with more hands-on experience. You also need to look at where you want to live. You can do a job search on Google, Monster, Indeed, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, or Ziprecruiter and see what kinds of companies there are for your specialization and how much they pay. I would look at these before you want a job to get an idea of the companies that are out there. You can join communities online. I listen to a lot of NASA and space new podcasts to find out about new companies.
