Does Texas have a high demand for High School Band Teachers?

I'm planning on being a high school band teacher, and I want to know if it would be worth it to move to Texas and try to teach there? What is the demand like for the position I want to go into? #high-school #teacher #band #Texas

B.K.’s Answer

Graduating from a high school that was number one in my city during my high school years, I love marching bands. Congratulations on considering this career that allows you to help students grow. It appears that Texas has some of the best high school marching bands. https://www.hornrank.com/p/top30.html

B.K. recommends the following next steps:

Talk to band teachers in Texas
Research the student interests in bands and review videos
Arrange a visit to schools in Texas with the band teacher

Hi - Texas has a big area to cover, as far as band teachers go. I have had 3 of my own children in band and I was in band as a kid, all in Texas. Being a great band teacher means being able to motivate kids, develop good relationships with the youth and be firm but patient. Some of the band teachers my kids complain about most tend to lose patience, don't care about the program, don't build a winning spirit. Being a high school band director means designing/or taking part in design of a strong marching show, and guiding kids to march to the best of their ability. Then, you need to be at all of the football games, so lots of night sand weekends will be spent with your students. Once marching season is over, you have to switch gears from marching, to concert season. How do you grow your good musicians in to great musicians -- you need to have connections to grow those great students for future opportunities.

Check out youtubes of Vandergrift High School - they have one heck of a marching program!! They do very well in concert season as well!

Good luck! We need great band teachers here in Texas ;) I wish you well!!

No not really, most positions are filled and stay filled for years. I went to a Fine Arts School in Texas and it was disappointing to say the least. If this is something you are considering look into bigger cities like San Antonio, Austin, Houston etc.
