Where is the best place for an illustration/graphic art paid internship?

For a budding illustration and graphic artist, what would a good example of a paid internship that has reasonable entry? As a young multi talented artist, I have a strong passion about concept sketching and art and want to focus deeply on that aspect. I would like to be employed after college, and I wanted to start my research now. #art #graphic-design #design #internship #artist #paidinternship

Sorry, but illustration internships aren't really a thing and "graphic artist" is too broad a description. For concept art, the gaming industry would be the place to look. I'd recommend checking out the online communities centered around that of which there are many. Also, one can get started in that discipline by joining a mod team. That wouldn't pay or count as an internship school credits wise, but it's a way to start getting experience. The paid internships I know of are usually for graphic design at design firms and ad agencies. This could give one some experience in a field that uses illustration, but it would not be focused on illustration.

Rachel’s Answer

In order to get an internship, you need a portfolio. In design / illustration, you are your portfolio. In other words, your worth in the market is dependent on how good your portfolio looks. What is in your portfolio? Is it more graphic design or illustration? These can go hand-in-hand, but you need a skill that you can market. If you've got a portfolio full of characters and animation, check out Cartoon Network (Turner) or Nickelodeon or a game company. If you've got more Graphic Design, look at internships at Ad Agencies (in Atlanta, there's BBDO, 22 Squared, J. Walter Thompson, Moxie, Digitas) as well as the companies above ^. They also hire designers.

Rachel recommends the following next steps:

Make a portfolio. If you don't have one, you don't have anything to market.
Look at the above recommended companies and also google ad agencies, gaming companies, and animation studios.
Keep trying. The design industry is really competitive. My first portfolio wasn't good, so I made it better. Keep making work. Keep upping your bar for what you can produce. Look at professional designers and illustrators in the industry you're interested in and look at their portfolios. Use their work to learn what you need to make to succeed.
