Daryl’s Answer

I worked as a teller in school placement. Learnt about transactions, changing foreign currency and loans in a few weeks. You learn basic banking and customer service and can explore more from there if you are good at math, people skils and want to learn more about managing transactions.

Daryl recommends the following next steps:

Take the opportunity.
Learn some new skills where you can apply your current knowledge and see what parts of banking you enjoy.

Whitney’s Answer

Hi Johnathan, I used to be a teller for a few years. Most of my day was spent talking to customers and helping them with their bank transactions (deposits, withdrawal, cashing checks, etc). As a teller, you need to keep track of the cash in your drawer, count it and balance it at the end of the day and carefully go through the day's transactions if the amount doesn't match. You also look out for transactions that might not be allowed, like someone who isn't on the account trying to take money out, or someone trying to use an ATM card that isn't theirs.

Some bank branches are very busy and you have customers all day, others are quieter.

Whitney recommends the following next steps:

Go to your local bank and ask the manager if you could do an informational interview with them (where you ask them questions about the bank and what skills you need to work there even if they don't have a position open right now).
