Mahesh’s Answer

While a degree in Computer Science is not a "must", it will certainly provide a strong foundation. You could also pursue Computer Technology etc. There are a lot of free on-line course available for data science. I suggest you look into them and get an idea. These websites also offer certifications at a very nominal price. Hope this helps.

Mi’s Answer

Based on what I knew, to take the learning in college was much useful for you to take the knowledge you need purposeful and directly; and they can give you the certificate which I thought is the most powerful evidence in the real outside world. Although the ability is first standard in my opinion, this will give you the support when you look for the job or when HR do the filter to the resumes.

Although you might also can get what you need as a programmer by doing Self-study or somewhere such as code bootcamp, I did not think this also work for data science area.

Thank you comment icon Very thank Mi!!! Victor

Aderson’s Answer

I have my bachelor and master’s in business administration and during my master studies my college started offering a 6 months data scientist program. I would suggest looking into your current university and local community college as an entry point and to gather more information on the courses and fees. Also, look at national accredited universities with master’s degrees in data scientist, this way could take longer and be more expensive but will help to build more extensive network and open potential future jobs. Data scientist is a new and exhilarated career that is in the earlier years. Good luck!

James’s Answer

Changing from administration to data science could be an exciting career move, and I agree with Mi Gao that school and certification will be much more helpful than self-study or "bootcamps", especially on a resume. One thing to keep in mind is that a data science career will be much more numbers and math-focused- be prepared to do more calculations and critical thinking in your job! If that sounds fun to you then definitely pursue data science programs at the undergraduate level. Most if not all data science jobs require a mathematics-based undergraduate degree at a minimum.

James recommends the following next steps:

research local schools with computer science/data science programs and what credits they may give for courses already taken in your administrative degree
