Wow, there are so many fantastic responses here! I'd also recommend diving right in and getting hands-on with any computer, laptop, Mac, or even a tablet you have. Just start exploring and doing things. One method that really works for me is discovering a small computer-related project on platforms like Youtube. I follow along, recreate them myself, and then experiment a bit to deepen my understanding. This approach usually makes learning fun, and as a result, it's much easier to remember what I've learned. Best of luck to you!

Hi! There are many different ways to enhance your computer skills. Here are some of the following items that I did early in my career:
1. Leverage Online Resources
Start by using free online resources to gain a foundational understanding of various tech topics. YouTube, for instance, is a great starting point. You can find tutorials and video lectures from experts on practically any subject, from basic programming to advanced system configurations.
2. Engage in Structured Online Courses
Once you've grasped the basics, consider enrolling in an online course that offers a deeper dive into specific areas. Platforms like Udemy and ACloudGuru offer courses in a range of topics including cloud computing, web development, and cybersecurity. These platforms often provide interactive components and projects which are crucial for practical learning.
3. Hands-On Practice
Perhaps the most important step early in your career is getting hands-on experience. This could be as simple as building your own computer, creating a basic website, or setting up a virtual machine. GitHub has many great open-source projects and there are also tons of tutorials on YouTube too. Additionally, many online courses talked about in point #2 have lab / learning environments as well.
4. Pursue Certifications
Certifications can not only validate your skills but also make you stand out in the job market. Depending on your interest, you might consider certifications like CompTIA A+ for hardware, CCNA for networking, or introductory AWS/GCP/Azure certs for cloud computing.
5. Academic Programs
If you're looking for a comprehensive and structured approach to learning, enrolling in an associate's or bachelor’s degree program in computer science/Information Technology or a related field can be beneficial. Universities provide a balanced curriculum that covers both theoretical aspects and practical skills, along with opportunities for internships, networking, and post graduate job careers.

Hey Stanley, it's great to see you're considering expanding your computer skills! The world of computing is vast and ever-evolving, much like the ocean. It's impossible to master every aspect, so it's best to focus on a specific area that interests you.
Are you more drawn to software or hardware?
If it's software, do you want to dive into coding, learn about pre-existing applications to assist others, or perhaps explore the fascinating field of Artificial Intelligence?
If hardware piques your interest, would you prefer to learn about assembly or chip design?
Once you've decided on an area, I suggest starting with free online training resources such as Udemy. If you find a real passion for it, you could then consider enrolling in courses at your local community college to further enhance your skills.
I hope this guidance sets you on the right path. Happy learning! :-)

One of the most recognized tools is YouTube. You can also look to other online learning sites for skills building.
Once again getting hands on to test what you learn is a great way to connect the information to the skill. Dont get frustrated with a difficult skill, computer skills like most things in life are attributed to muscle memory. The more you do something the easier it gets.

Hi! I think that starting off with a course on Coursera, YouTube, or Khan Academy about general computer architecture is a great starting point to see what area of computer engineering you would like to learn more about. From there you could try learning a new programming language like Python and see if you want to continue down the coding route or if you would like to learn more about the internal framework or go more into data science and branch out from there.

Great question - I think there are too many ways out there which could be very confusing and overwhelming. If you're just starting out as a beginner. Pick a language that has high demand - e.g. Python, once you do that, you can use free youtube videos to learn about the basics. Next, you can then take a course on Udemy, LinkedIn and platform to build more on this skill. Also, the greatest way to learn any programming language is practice solving real-world problems. Build simple applications and then move to complex, make sure you try to solve a problem first before looking up the solution. Be patient, enjoy the process. Good luck :)

As many of our wonderful community members have pointed out, the realm of computer skills is vast and varied. Your specific interests and goals will guide your journey into the world of computers. A great starting point would be to conduct a Google search on "current labor force market trends". This will give you a clear picture of the direction the industry is moving towards. Identify various computer-related fields that pique your interest. These could span across graphic design, movie editing, programming, construction/design, AI, and more. Choose three areas that excite you the most and dive right in. Embrace the process of making mistakes and learning from them.
For instance, you could explore:
1. Graphic Design - Tools like Blender, GIMP, and Adobe Student version (which requires a small investment) are great to start with.
2. Programming - MS Visual Code is a good platform to begin. Look up the top three languages and give them a shot. Python, Go, and Javascript (React/Angular) are all free and worth exploring.
3. Building/Designing - YouTube is a treasure trove of information where you can find PC builders. Start there to grasp the basics of how a PC functions, how to enhance its performance, and factors to consider when making modifications.

A lot of fantastic answers here, I would start by getting an understanding of the equipment that you have. Having a basic understanding of how systems work are the foundations to build from. If you are interested in coding, python is a great place to start. Think about redundant and repeatable things that you do on a day to day basis, and keep that in mind while watching videos on youtube about coding and python. The main thing is to have patience when learning and understanding the basics....it may not seem cool at first, but you will build of the foundations.

Hi Stanley,
All of my fellow responders have suggested some great ideas. Videos on Youtube, Khan Academy, Udemy, etc. are great starting points for diving deeper into specific computer based skills. One thing that may be useful to improve your general comfort with a computer is to identify tasks that seem repetitive and time consuming. There are often keyboard/software shortcuts that can save you a lot of time. For example, I once had to rename many files in quick succession. I started out right clicking the file, clicking rename, clicking within the file name, and typing the new name. To speed up the process, I looked up the keyboard shortcut for renaming files (F2 for me). This cut the time needed for the task in half.
Always be on the lookout for small ways to accelerate repetitive computer tasks!

Besides the obvious (practice, practice, practice), remember the truism, "It is easier to write code than to read code, but it is not always better to write code than to read code." Practice reading other people's code and understanding. Even look for case studies of how bugs were found & corrected in existing code, because programmers do that a lot.

Nathan’s Answer
All of the suggestions posted here are terrific. I want to suggest a more abstract idea that is especially helpful with broader topics such as computers and computer science. My suggestion is to be intentionally very curious. What that means is anytime you come across something about computers that you either don't know or would like to learn more about, make a deliberate effort to seek out information and learn about it. This could be anything - maybe you're working in Excel and wonder if there's a faster way to do a certain task. Maybe you're coding something and want to know if there's a more efficient operation to achieve the same result. Maybe you're looking at a new computer and wondering what exactly makes one type of processor or graphics card better or different than another - or what these components even do to begin with. Maybe you want to learn about how computers are built and how they work "behind the scenes". Whatever the case is, anytime one of these thoughts comes into your head, make a very intentional effort to seek out answers and information about it. Don't just let the curiosity come and go, act on it!
What this will do is overtime you'll build up a collection of knowledge and skills that are naturally tailored to what you are interested in. And the best part is, curiosity builds on itself in the same way knowledge builds on itself - the more you know, the more you'll want to know. The reason I suggest this is because training courses, while extremely useful and something you should absolutely pursue, can sometimes be a little overwhelming; especially early on if you're not sure exactly what you want to know and learn.
Being intentionally and actively curious has helped me learn so much about a variety of topics - from computer science to music and music theory. I hope this is something that you can utilize too. I wish you all the best in whatever you want to learn about!

Improving your computer skills is a multi-faceted endeavor that can significantly enhance your productivity, problem-solving capabilities, and marketability in today's tech-centric workplace. Below, I provide a structured approach to sharpening your computer skills, tailored for professionals seeking practical and actionable strategies.
1. Assess Your Current Skill Level
Identify Your Baseline: Start by assessing your current skills. Are you a beginner, intermediate, or advanced user? Understanding your starting point helps in setting realistic goals and choosing the right resources.
Areas to Consider:
Basic computer operations (file management, shortcuts, software installation)
Software proficiency (Office Suite, email clients, professional tools specific to your industry)
Programming or scripting basics (for automating tasks or data analysis)
Understanding of operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux)
2. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Specific Skills: Define what specific computer skills you want to acquire or improve. This could range from learning advanced Excel functions, mastering graphic design software like Adobe Photoshop, or gaining proficiency in a programming language such as Python.
Timeline and Milestones: Set realistic timelines and break your learning into manageable milestones. For instance, you might aim to learn basic HTML within a month or get comfortable with a project management tool like Asana in two weeks.
3. Utilize Online Resources and Formal Education
Online Courses: Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, and Khan Academy offer courses on virtually every aspect of computer technology, from beginner to advanced levels.
Tutorials and Guides: YouTube, blogs, and forums are great for free, specific tutorials. For example, if you need to understand a particular software feature, there's likely a tutorial available.
Certifications: Consider obtaining certifications that can bolster your resume and validate your skills. Certifications from Microsoft, CompTIA, or specific software vendors (like Adobe or Cisco) can be particularly valuable.
4. Practical Application
Hands-On Practice: Theory is essential, but practice is crucial. Apply your new skills in real-world scenarios, whether through projects at work, internships, or personal projects.
Project-Based Learning: Engage in small projects that challenge you to use your new skills. For example, create a website, automate a report, or design a newsletter.
5. Join Communities and Network
Forums and Online Communities: Join communities like Stack Overflow, GitHub, or specialized forums where you can ask questions, share knowledge, and learn from experienced individuals.
Networking Events and Workshops: Attend workshops, webinars, and networking events. These can provide both learning opportunities and the chance to connect with professionals who can offer guidance and insights.
6. Stay Updated and Keep Learning
Follow Industry Trends: Technology evolves rapidly. Stay updated by following tech news, subscribing to industry newsletters, and attending relevant conferences or seminars.
Review and Refresh: Regularly review what you’ve learned and update your skills as necessary. Technologies and software update often, so staying informed is crucial.
7. Teach Others
Share Your Knowledge: Teaching skills to others can reinforce your own understanding and expose any gaps in your knowledge. Offer to lead a workshop at your workplace or write a blog post about what you've learned.
Conclusion
Improving your computer skills is a journey of continuous learning and application. By setting clear goals, leveraging a variety of learning resources, and actively applying your skills, you can significantly enhance your technical proficiency and confidence. Remember, the key to mastery is not just learning but also doing and teaching. These steps will not only improve your skills but also position you as a versatile and valuable professional in any industry.

Start your journey by diving into online courses that match your passions. You can find free guides and YouTube videos to help you along the way. Begin with coding basics, like crafting a simple 'Hello World' printout. As you gain confidence, you can start tackling more intricate tasks. The more you practice, the more fun and easier it becomes. When you're ready, challenge yourself by finding multiple solutions to the same problem. This strategy will help you learn new skills and techniques. Don't worry if you can't solve a problem or fix a bug right away. With continued practice, it will all become easier. Remember, patience is key, and the journey is just as important as the destination. Over time, you'll see yourself growing into a coding expert. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey! :)

Hi,
Computer skills is a very broad term, it would be better to understand/analyze what specific skills you would like to pursue. It would be difficult to assess our own interest initially (and may feel daunting task), however that's the time to explore as much as possible until we find the area we want to pursue.
There are a lot of comprehensive responses above; and any sort of training videos would help. The primary websites are YouTube, LinkedIn, Coursera, UDemy etc. A simple Google search would also give you the generic and also targeted details in terms of FAQs, Videos, Tutorials.
