Megan’s Answer

There are a lot of different ways to become a professional animator!

The first step I'd recommend is finding out what you like about animation/cartoons and what kind of job you might enjoy. You could start by trying to make your own animated films/shorts or collaborate on animated projects with your friends. You could also research positions available in the animation industry at companies you enjoy, or apply to intern at an animation studio as a Production Assistant! This could help get your foot in the door and also give you an idea of what animated productions are like.

There are also a ton of resources online, including tools to learn the animation process.

For example, here's one artist talking about his career path to becoming a Storyboard Artist: https://youtu.be/6lXzlHep-mM

Each person's path is different - if you take time to find what you care about, what you're interested in, and which career matches your skill set, you can create a path that makes sense for you.

Megan recommends the following next steps:

Think about what part of the animation process you enjoy or that you would like to pursue.
Start learning software, animation processes, or even try making your own short animation.
Research what kinds of positions are available at animation studios and what kind of work they're looking for.
Reach out to artists you like and learn about what paths they took to advance in their field.
Seek out the animation community by attending screenings or other animation related events to start meeting people in the community!

Mike’s Answer

I’m a photographer but I know animators and people who work in the business . Most go to college or art school to study Animation . Alternatively you could contact a few animation companies and ask to be an intern . The best way is to ask can you come to show them your work . That way your talking directly to people in the industry . It doesn’t matter how much experience you have or the level of your work at the start . The key thing is making those connections .

Mike recommends the following next steps:

Contact animation firms
Get some work to show them
Go for face to face meetings - not e mail !
