I would intern at a restaurant for 6 months and do every job they have in the kitchen so you know the ins and outs of what it takes to run a kitchen. You also need to show you are a leader, you have to be open and honest, if you don't know something find out how to do it or have someone who does teach you. I would recommend researching every aspect of being a head chef, it doesn't hurt to reach out to a local restaurant head chef or even celebrity chef like Guy Fieri through social media but be respectful.
Good Luck with everything Charles! I think you are on the right path for your future.

You're on the right track. You need to get as much experience in the culinary world as possible. That involves knowing every position involved in running a restaurant. Understand what the dish washers and servers do so you can get perspective from their point of view. Talk to kitchen staff and food preps as well as the Chef's. Connect with as many successful chefs as you can. That's called networking and it's the best way to get useful relative information. Shadow a few people you admire, meaning go to their job and follow them around a few days. They work long hard days, including holidays and weekends so make sure you are prepared for that kind of a commitment. Good luck
