Joe’s Answer

Find a business that will let you intern. I learned more about Graphic Design at my first job in 3 weeks than I did going to school for four years. Plus, the student loans will not be paid for by this profession. Try it for a year without a BFA, you may be surprised. Art is awesome.

Yedi’s Answer

Hi Jaden—Joe is right about experience on the job, there is no substitute.

If you're looking to see if a career in design is a good fit for you, I'd recommend seeing if your interests naturally align with any of the directions you could take. There's product design, motion, packaging, advertising, environmental and more—check out this article that does a nice overview.

One thing that is nice about a career in design is that there is a lot of flexibility in choosing your work environment. You can get a corporate job, freelance at an agency, or build your own business depending on your skillset and where you are in your career.

In terms of personality, design is a good fit for people who:

  • are good listeners
  • have empathy for users
  • are curious/creative
  • can stay organized
  • work well under tight deadlines

Hope that helps!

Judith’s Answer

Becoming a graphic designer does not begin in college. Doing art every day, both on the computer and in individual illustration, requires practice. Completing projects in a timely way in the college environment is based on having that experience. Working in all disciplines of composition, graphics, design and balance should begin as early as possible.

Judith recommends the following next steps:

Take art courses with the best instructors you can before reaching college.
Do art every day.
Work on design problems.
Practice thinking outside the box to develop your personal style.
Work in teams in design whenever possible.
