Bhanu Priya’s Answer

One day work in the life of an engineer depends on what profile or role is he/she in. Typically, the routine of a software developer will be different from a consultant role, and so does the vastness of this domain is.
If you love what you do, you will not even realise where the entire day is spent in office, managing between work and your personal life. Good luck !

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Roland G. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

I will share that my process each work day has varied based on the type of job I have had and the number of years I have had in my engineering career. Early in my career, I did a fair amount of traveling for work, so in addition to the tasks that you might expect a person to do at their desk, there was the whole process of packing/unpacking, trips to and from the airport, meeting new clients and completing the tasks for those clients on time.

As I moved through different roles, not all of them had the title of engineer. One of the things that I love about having obtained an engineering degree is that I have learned skills that allows me to do many types of jobs. In my role of writing code, on some days my process starts with understanding data elements that I have to work with, understanding what the outcomes on the use of that data needs to be and incrementally structuring code to meet the need. On a good day, I can finish that code pretty quickly...and then there are the other days :). So I think the good news here is that there rarely is a situation where the process in one work day stays the same. That works for people like me who want to remain engaged and who love to learn new things.

Hope you find this answer helpful and best of luck to you!
