What is the long-term potential for an animator?

It really depends! If you're good, a company is more likely to keep you on. E.g., I've met Disney animators who've been there for over 20 years. At the same time, some animators/artists like moving around, and might leave or travel to new places to work every year or so.

With great experience an animator can achieve high end projects and can work for big companies and movies as well. The demand is great now as people are more into digital world.
