Is it hard to get hired as an animator?

I'm a 17-year old senior in high school and i aspire to become an animator. I have no idea how much the animation field demands to be hired and i worry that there are limited positions to which i can pick up with little to no experience. #Animation #art #design

Hello, Frank

I believe it depends on the area in which you live, the market, your experience, etc. This is the case with most jobs. When I decided to move from freelance design to corporate design I had to relocate as there were little job opportunities where I lived. I also suggest you do some research regarding the field. It's also a good idea to do an internship or freelance to build up a portfolio. Portfolios are key to landing a job. Hope this helps.

Best,

Isabel

Hi Frank,

I also agree with Isabel. Research and location are key in planning your next steps into getting into animation. Look at YouTube videos on how to animate to see what type of animation you are interested in. If you are looking to get into video gaming animation you can also look at GameDev Map(https://gamedevmap.com) to see where a lot of the game companies are located.

I would also look at online schools like Animation Mentor(https://www.animationmentor.com/) if you are specifically looking to learn animation. They offer great classes for reasonable prices compared to major universities.

I also agree with Isabel on doing internships or freelance as well to get your foot in the door. I started as an intern and worked my way up to an Animation Lead for the same company. Networking is also very important. The animation industry is very small so treat people right and help others when possible.

Hope that helps. I would be willing to review and provide feedback once you get your animation portfolio together.
