Hi Jennifer, I'm a mechanical engineer do really enjoy solving daily problem where I work in Operation maintenance field which required timely action and fast response.

HVAC is one of the most challenging area in mechanical engineering since you should keep up to date to what's new in this industry and be aware of troubleshooting techniques even as engineer you shouldn't repair the fault yourself but being aware of the problem dimension make it easier when it get to taking decisions or risk taking.

Hi Jennifer, not sure you are still looking for feedback or not, however similar to you I started at a trade school called Dunwoody here in Minnesota and received a degree in HVAC. Right out of school I received a job in the field working on residential and commercial equipment.
The time spent in the field doing it is most educational and after you gain some experience there are many directions you can go. I have seen people go back into teaching HVAC in classrooms if they excelled in the trade. I moved into building maintenance and then management and now manage multiply facility sites and people.
My recommendation to you is to complete a 2 year degree through schooling in HVAC and then work in the field and find out what you find interesting and you can specialize in that area.
I will add this as well, I earned a AS and BS degree in collage and used my employer to pay for my classes, so additional schooling is available if you work for the right employer.

Hope this helps!
Good Luck!
Brad
