Andrew Castelli’s Answer

Dealing with clients can be and should be an incredible experience and learning relationship, as it is through them, that we are able to have our buildings built. We owe them our respect, dedication and commitment to provide the best architectural solutions possible.
As for the second part of your question referring to how free can an Architect be, it depends what you mean by freedom. If you mean that by being an Architect one will be able to have an impact on the quality of the built environment, that he will be able to practice the profession that he has chosen, that through that practice, he can take his knowledge and make it concrete for everyone to enjoy, yes, then the Architect has quite a lot of freedom.
But the freedom to practice also means responsibility- to protect the life, safety and welfare of the public assuring that our buildings are well executed, will not collapse or injure people unexpectedly, are up to Code and ADA (American Disabilities Act) requirements, zoning and many other regulatory issues that must be dealt with.
The profession may also experience upturns and downturns depending on the state of the economy and the business cycle.
There may be some words that you may not understand yet. I suggest looking them up for better understanding of this content.

Good luck!

Client Relations are essential when working as an architect, that's how you get new work. You meet with them often discussing their projects. You do have some freedom to design their projects, however it is important to work with clients to make sure you design something they want not you. Ultimately if the client is happy, you get paid and get new work and referrals in the future.
