If you aren't, here's what you can do:
- Ensure the kitchen you're working at has enough sales (enough customers coming in everyday)
- Check if they give good reviews about you and your work
- Do the best of yourself and evaluate whether your work is essential
Once you get a YES for the 3 points above, you'll be able to articulate that and negotiate a better wage with your boss.

Being a valuable employee and improving that value to your employer is what gets you promoted. You should always evaluate your skills and find ways to increase them. Never stop learning new skills as this will add value to your resume. After graduating from culinary school I started out as a cook making minimum wage. I am now the Director of Culinary Research and Development for a food manufacturing company. I worked my way up through the kitchen brigade system and was an Executive Chef, then I managed to get a chance to become a research and development chef. I now run my own department. I kept learning and improving and when the chance to move up came I was ready. This is crucial as you need to be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Employers like knowledgeable people who work hard and have a great attitude. Just make yourself ready.
