Aside from being able to fix your own vehicle, you are in the Transportation industry that moves people or products from one destination to another which will always be needed. If you like tinkering with mechanical things, you've found a good area for you to combine your interests with a career which usually means having fun at work. As you see in the news, Cars are evolving from common Combustion Engines to Electric Motors (think TESLA) so you'll always have to evolve and learn new things too. There are some areas that haven’t seen much change so far, think Disk Brakes, Interiors and Body work but they will in the future as technology and materials advancements encourage changes for Safely, fuel efficiency, comfort and beauty. If you like tinkering around, there are other potential fields to explore on the government website below. It lists summaries, salaries and demand for the various careers. mechanics Engineering

Hi Dearson,
While I’m not an auto mechanic professional, I have family members that are in that profession.
I agree with Roque’s answer regarding “fixing your own vehicle”, “tinkering”. My brother who happens to be a Lead – Journey Man at Penske agrees that a big plus is job security in an industry that continues to see growth. He started out with cars but has since moved to diesel (trucks).
Other perks (that my brother has mentioned) are:
• the satisfaction that you get after fixing a particularly challenging job (which is not so different from what I do in the technology industry).
• In his spare time, he can make “side” money by doing jobs for friends.
• Joining a car club. As James’ stated, a great way to make some good friends.
• An opportunity to perhaps open your own auto shop or franchise.
Best of luck!

Great question Dearson, As a long time supervisor of auto technicians who started out as one I have found this to be a well respected career that pays above average wages and will give you a lifetime of great employment! It is challenging and ever changing. I would highly recommend a two year college degree in auto technology coupled with hooking up with a franchised dealer [Toyota, GM, Subaru, Ford, Etc]. All have apprentice programs that take from 2-6 years depending on your pace and their participation. Many dealers work through local colleges and some may even sponsor you. Just about any dealer is looking right now for enthusiastic people like you. Go Get Em!
