Chris’s Answer

Robotics in school will focus quite a bit on 3-dimensions mathematics. In engineering practice, there are two broad uses of robotics. The first would be those who design robots, and those who utilize robots. Those who design robots will get to utilize their advanced mathematics skills to create software and design robots for other end users. This is a good mix of electrical and mechanical engineering, since a good knowledge of motors and servos will be required, but power and control systems are also key for the robotics designer. The rest of the world are 'end users' of robots. The most often use for these is in the manufacturing industry. Assembly of cars, planes, electronic circuit boards and the chips that power all these things need to be made in places - and robots are essential. It is common for end users to have a 2 year degree (but not required), and they will normally learn a single type of robot or a family of robots. My own experiences included a robot that automatically dispensed thermal gel, a control system for an ultrasonic radar (grad school), and I worked in a 'Surface Mount' technology shop where robots place 100s of components per minute-some the size of a grain of salt-on circuit boards. These boards would be built into larger assemblies in sound equipment, telecommunications equipment and consumer products.
