Give some thought to the people who will benefit the most from your counseling. What areas do you have a "calling" towards, where you feel that your counseling would provide the most value to others? Do you want to help people who are mentally ill, who are recovering from an addiction of some kind, or who are simply looking for guidance on how to increase their net worth? Do you want to help people find their career of choice, or higher education path? Your area of interest should determine your course of study, although an undergraduate Psychology, or Education degree will give you some exposure to what different counseling careers offer and set the precedent for what you should focus on in graduate school.

In Texas, all clinical counselors must be licensed. It might be a good idea to take some psych courses during college & align yourself with a science major. Classwork will help you determine your interest level & further define your area, i.e.: social work vs licensed certified clinical counselors.
