IMPORTANT Safety protocols for welding!!!
I’ve welded for 15 years now and I will list the most important safety rules to follow that will ensure a productive day with no accidents.
1. Make sure you are dressed for the occasion. PPE ( personal protective equipment )
That’s what they call the stuff that is used to keep us safe.
Wear durable clothing: Long sleeve shirts, denim jeans, leather shoes/boots, leather Gloves, welding hood accompanied with a welding cap to protect your head and hair.
2. Always wear safety glasses! If you are doing anything other than welding( buffing, grinding, cutting) always keep your eyes protected. You only have two. There are no replacements available if you lose one!
3. Always be aware of your surroundings while you are working. Know what’s goin on! Especially if there is moving equipment around you.
4. When using power tools, such as grinders, make sure you have the knowledge of how to operate them properly. I suggest to get this knowledge from an experienced user. There is a right way to use them and a definite wrong way. The wrong way can result in injuries very rapidly.
5. Use common sense. If it’s hot don’t touch it without something to protect you.
6. Plan ahead! Check your area for any potential hazards before you start welding and then be mindful of these hazards as you carry on.
Check for fire potentials prior to, and continue watching for fires until complete. This includes on your person. You can catch on fire just as easy as anything around you.
7. Keep your work area clean and organized. This can prevent accidental fires and injuries. It also makes you much more professional. Keep cords and leads untangled at all times.
8. Use the right tool for the job. Ensure that you are using tools for the function in which they were designed. Some tools used improperly or for tasks they were not designed for can result in major injuries including death.
9. Always protect your face while operating a grinder. The disks and wheels used on these can and have been known to explode. The grinders run at a very high rpm and if the attachments become distorted or damaged, they can explode while in use. Never use an attachment that is damaged. Throw it away.
10. Use any and all protective coverings available for you and your surroundings to protect against fire and heat. You can use leather sleeves and leather arm pads to protect your arms. There are neck wraps available as well. Use heat blankets to protect material around your weld. You can even place them under the welds.
